HYPOCRITICAL MASS

Central to Mutually Assured Seduction (MAS) is the celebration of light, a most worthy seductress and, by extension, it’s strange and beautiful bedfellow, darkness.

We need dark to know light, their ongoing tryst of devotion as perpetual as it is ineffable. Light and dark, good and evil, love and war, mating and rejection…

To highlight this enduring drama, the old-school neon light of My Happy Placebo was positioned in direct line-of-site of the vapid glow of Hypocritical Mass, the neon reflection superimposed on the glass walls that enclosed the LED-lit screen.

Is the collision of these two technologies in poor taste? Does the provocation evoke reverence or disrespect? Is the interplay too obtuse? Too obvious?

Glowing fervently, closed off from the show in a room of its own, the LED-lit screen seeks to beckon us nearer. Are we able to resist, instead honoring things crafted the old-fashioned way, painstakingly and by hand, escaping the infinite stroll toward instant gratification?

Beyond questions of quality and consumption, Hypocritical Mass represents our struggle with a sense of entitlement, an insatiable need for attention, and our demand for endless options. Ultimately, do we care enough to respect, and protect, objects that are singular, fussy, delicate, breakable, and hard to replace?
